Pathways to employment

Welcome to HELP Enterprises’ Pathways to Employment program.

Background

The Pathways to Employment Program (PTE) commenced in 2011 under the banner of Building Skills. We’ve changed our name for 2012 to better reflect the services we offer. PTE is a unique program run from HELP’s Chessom Street Mitchelton offices for the community of Brisbane West. The program is provided FREE OF CHARGE to participants thanks to funding support from the Department of Communities Queensland (Disability Services).

Pathways to Employment is designed for young people who are unable to complete their secondary education or who find themselves significantly disadvantaged from gaining employment and require extra support to get to where they want to go.

What does the Pathways to Employment program offer?

  • Participants will be provided with the opportunity to develop a personal set of goals for their future work and life, together with a tailored plan for personal and skill development to help them achieve these goals.
  • At the outset, participants will undertake an 8 week training program in a supported small group setting in topic areas considered necessary for gaining entry to the workforce. Topics covered include; Personal Goal Setting; Workplace Literacy and Numeracy; Communication Skills; Workplace Health and Safety; Workplace Relations; Resume Writing; Interview Techniques and Computer Skills. Where necessary individuals will be supported in ‘Travel Training’ to ensure they can travel to and from a workplace safely and independently.
  • Following the skills development training, participants will be supported by a PTE team member to find a work placement in an area of interest, giving them the opportunity to practice the skills they have learnt. Drawing from our local employers’ data base, supported work placements are designed to provide the young person with the opportunity to test out their chosen career paths and gain valuable experience along the way.
  • Where necessary, vocational training in the individual’s chosen career path may be organized with the ongoing support and assistance of a PTE team member.
  • Hospitality and horticulture training in a commercial kitchen and nursery are run from the HELP Enterprises’ Mitchelton site. Depending on the young person’s skills and interests, training and activities in these vocations can readily be arranged.
  • When a suitable job is found, a PTE team member will provide ongoing support in the early days to make sure they are feeling confident in the new job.
  •
