Fresh off a season on the slopes creepy crawler lover Allirra joined the HELP team in 2017. Full of enthusiasm and a drive to create positive change, Allirra now uses her background in the arts in her role as Hub Coordinator, supporting participants to achieve their goals and experience all the opportunities life has to offer.
Tell us a little about your background
I began the role of support worker when I was at University studying Bachelor of Fine Arts (majoring in painting) ten years ago. The person I supported was my only client for nine years and I’m proud to call them a friend now.
What led you to join the HELP team?
I had just moved home from a ski season in British Columbia, Canada, and was looking for employment. I had such a good interview with HELP and was made to feel really comfortable- so had a good impression right off the bat. I’m also passionate about working for people with disabilities, I was raised in an egalitarian & equal opportunist household. When I grew up I realised unfortunately not everyone has this view. I believe HELP’s mission aligns with supporting people to reach their potential and enacting positive change.
What are you most passionate about? What inspires you?
My passions are art, travel, architecture, interior design, genealogy, crime podcasts, nature/hiking, and cooking shows. I’m inspired by anyone who lives their lives authentically and people who go out of their way to be kind to others.
On the weekend you’ll find me......
On a hike with my sister and nephew, out to dinner with friends, or at the beach.
What’s the best part of the job?
Interacting with people – people with disabilities, their families, and our support workers. I honestly learn something new every day. Even when you’re not having a good day, our clients just seem to know and always say the right thing or do something thoughtful to put a smile on your face.
What’s your favourite HELP memory?
Help Enterprise's 50th anniversary celebration at Howard Smith Wharves a couple of years ago.
What are your plans for the future? What are you most looking forward to?
Personally this year I am focusing on saving money for a house deposit. I am also looking forward to the potential of an interstate holiday with friends over Christmas. Professionally I’m looking forward to putting my energy into the new hub programs and the refurbishment of Sunnybank Hub.
3 fun facts about me
I’ve skydived but I’m scared of heights, I love all creepy crawlies (including spiders and snakes!), I’m a terrible skier but I’ve lived at two different ski resorts.
If you could invite any three people to dinner living or dead who would they be?
Jimi Hendrix, Frida Kahlo & my mum.
What’s your secret talent?
Drawing, painting and cooking.
Favourite place in the world?
That’s a tough one!! Probably Canada or Italy (I’m part Italian & some of my best friends live in Canada). I really love the UK, Hawaii, New York, Tasmania (wine region, Freycinet, Wineglass bay, Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair etc.) and Uluru.
