"I'm passionate about helping others reach their potential and have the same opportunities regardless of their abilities."
Team Leader Alana is one of our fresh faces here at HELP. Since joining our Mitchelton Hub two months ago Alana has been busy connecting with our participants and families, and occasionally moonlighting as a Coordinator at our Pinjarra Hills, Sunnybank, and Wynnum Hubs. Alana is excited to put her prior experiences in allied health and disability care to work and help participants realise their goals.
Tell us a little about your background
I started my career in the allied health sector, however, I have since shifted my energies to making a difference in social enterprises. I thoroughly enjoy working with a team to support people with mental health challenges and disabilities to return to life and achieve their goals.
How long have you worked at HELP?
What led you to join the HELP team?
Their mission to enhance the lifestyle, independence and ambitions of people with disability!
What does a day in the life of Alana look like at work?
My morning starts by ensuring that support workers and participants have everything that they need for a great day ahead. I provide mentoring and supervision to staff for upskilling and professional development. I also have the pleasure of meeting with families and participants to discuss their goals and how we can assist them to achieve these at HUB. You can sometimes find me at Pinjarra Hills, Sunnybank Hills and Wynnum filling in for Coordinators.
What are you most passionate about? What inspires you?
I'm passionate about helping others reach their potential and have the same opportunities regardless of their abilities. The motivation of our staff to make a difference inspires me to find more ways to do the same each and every day!
On the weekend you’ll find me......
Going on adventures with my rescue German Shepherd (Sky), hanging out with friends, and relaxing at home.
What’s the best part of the job?
Connecting with people from all walks of life!
What’s your favourite HELP memory so far?
Spending time in the beautiful garden with participants at Mitchelton Hub picking lemons, mandarins and oranges whilst looking at a family of ducklings. How lucky are we!
What are your plans for the future? What are you most looking forward to?
My plan for the future is to own acreage, maybe experience living overseas, and travel all over the United Kingdom. I am most looking forward to growing more as an individual and living life to the fullest.
3 fun facts about me...
I have been riding horses for 20 years, my favourite food is gelato, and I went to boarding school in Warwick QLD.
If you could invite any three people to dinner living or dead who would they be?
Whitney Houston - I would love to hear her sing in person; Jamie Oliver - because he can cook something delicious; Martin Seligman - I would love to talk to him about his theories of positive psychology and wellbeing.
What’s your secret talent?
I can learn pieces on the piano by ear.
Favourite place in the world?
Cedar Creek Rock Pools, just past Samford Valley.
Everything happens for a reason!
